This course will provide students with an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the human body including the structure and function of human cells, tissues and organs. An emphasis on human anatomy with an associated introduction to physiology provides the foundation knowledge for subsequent studies in physiology and other health related courses.


An organ systems approach is used in this course to study the anatomy and physiology of healthy people. Body systems covered in this course include cardiovascular system, blood, lymphatic and immune systems, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, integumentary system, musculoskeletal system, and an introduction to the nervous and endocrine systems.

This course contains a highly recommended residential school for external students and highly recommended on-campus laboratories or practical classes for on-campus students (non-attendance will mean the student misses an element for assessment preparation and/or an element of assessment preparation).


On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Describe the structure and function of body cells, tissues and organs;
  2. Describe the gross anatomy of major organ systems of the human body;
  3. Explain the basic physiology of major organ systems of the human body;
  4. Explain the integration of organ systems to maintain homeostasis;
  5. Demonstrate skills and knowledge required to perform laboratory experiments safely with appropriate equipment, including computer software and hardware for data acquisition and analysis.

  1. Students to satisfactorily complete laboratory activities.
  2. Students to satisfactorily participate in the on-line discussion groups.

  4. This will be an online exam. Students will be provided further instruction regarding the exam by their course examiner via StudyDesk. The examination date will be available via UConnect when the Alternate Assessment Schedule has been released.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    External students are highly recommended to attend the residential school as the residential school is linked to an assessment or an element of assessment preparation. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as online lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2021 are:
    An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.

    Requirements after S1 2021:
    Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials and translation dictionary. Students whose first language is not English, may take an appropriate unmarked non-electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Normally Deferred and Supplementary Examinations are held in the next Examination period. In S1 2021 selected courses will pilot an early Deferred and Supplementary Examination period held within 30 business days of results release. The list of courses involved can be found at

Assessment notes

  1. In order to attend laboratory classes, students must provide and wear appropriate personal protective equipment. This shall include a laboratory coat, closed in shoes, and safety glasses. Such equipment must be approved by supervising staff. Failure to provide and wear the appropriate safety equipment will result in students being excluded from classes.

  2. As part of the highly recommended residential school, students may be expected to complete a combination of laboratories, practical classes and assessment as advised by the course examiner.

  1. Nursing students that enrol ONC will attend their laboratories ONC in intensive style over 3 days
