Rationale

Endocrinology is the study of the structure and function of hormones and their mode of action in the body. The endocrine system has a role in regulating all of the body's organ systems and an understanding of the nature of this system as well as how it is targeted by pharmacological interventions is key to the study of biomedical science.

Synopsis

The course will explore the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract and the endocrine system in greater depth than BIO1203 and BIO1206 and build upon the pharmacology introduced in BIO2118 by explaining the mechanisms of action of common pharmacological agents on the endocrine system and in the gastrointestinal tract.

This course contains a highly recommended residential school for both external and on-campus students.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Explain the function of the endocrine system;
  2. Explain the mechanisms by which hormones influence the processes of individual cells and whole body systems;
  3. Describe the mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses and major adverse effects for drugs used in the treatment of relevant disease states such as gastrointestinal disease and hormonal imbalance;
  4. Perform physiological and hormone-based assays on biological samples and analyse the data generated.
  5. Work in teams in the biomedical science laboratory to generate solutions to authentic clinical problems.

  2. This will be a Restricted Exam. The total working time for the examination is 2 hours. The examination date will be available via UConnect when the official examination timetable has been released.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    Students are highly recommended to attend the residential school as the residential school is linked to an assessment or an element of assessment preparation. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. To maximise their chances of satisfying the objectives of the practical component of the course, external and on-campus students should attend and actively participate in the highly recommended residential school as the residential school is linked to an assessment

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks or a grade of at least C-. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to be awarded a passing grade in this course. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents.php?id=14749PL (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the weighted marks available for that assessment item.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents/14749PL (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination); calculators which cannot hold textual information (students must indicate on their examination paper the make and model of any calculator(s) they use during the examination). Students whose first language is not English, may take an appropriate unmarked nonelectronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held during the next examination period.
