Rationale

Increasing demands for accountability in educational settings have resulted in the need for professionals and administrators in educational settings to be aware of and competent in the use of effective research-based methods to evaluate educational interventions and programs. Ethical reflective practitioners, scholar-practitioners, need to understand how to critically appraise evidence-based practices that are subject to critical analysis and evaluation by research methods.

Synopsis

This course introduces learners to the theory and practices of research methods suited to evaluation of educational interventions/programs conducted by reflective practitioners. Students will develop their understanding of different approaches to, and models of, research methods for educational evaluation; consider responses to ethical issues in the processes of evaluation; explore concepts and practices of qualitative and quantitative methods; understand data, data collection, and data analysis strategies. An intention of this course is to inform students' considerations of the methodological approach to the capstone master degree project.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. define and explain the contexts of education research (Forum postings and Assignment);
  2. understand ethics of using research methods for conducting evaluations in educational settings (Quiz and Forum postings) ;
  3. understand the distinctive features of quantitative and qualitative data and their roles in evaluation (Quiz, Forum postings and Assignment);
  4. understand the concepts of quantitative research methods suited to evaluation, including experimental, quasi-experimental, and non-experimental designs (Quiz, Forum postings and Assignment);
  5. understand the concepts of qualitative research methods suited to evaluation (Quiz, Forum postings and Assignment);
  6. apply relevant principles of research methods to critical analysis of research literature to inform a proposed research project (Quiz, Forum postings and Assignment);
  7. demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and bibliographic referencing (Forum postings and Assignment).

    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
