Fundamental to health professional practice is an understanding of how health and illness can be conceptualised and what factors determine health at an individual, family, community and population level. Providing holistic care across the lifespan is also dependent on the health professional developing an understanding of how an individual's health or experience of ill health may be influenced by the determinants of health. To meet changing health care demands, health professionals need to have an understanding of how different models and frameworks are used to respond to health priorities within the context of the Australian Health Care System.
Students will be able to describe how health, illness and wellness can be conceptualised across the lifespan and how these concepts can be applied in terms of contemporary health models, theories and frameworks. Students will be able to identify a range of determinants which may impact on health and behaviour including social / psychological/ biological/ and environmental factors. In addition, students will also begin to develop knowledge of how socioeconomic factors and health beliefs can also impact on an individual's experience of health or ill health. Students will also begin to develop knowledge of a health professional's role in preventing illness and promoting health and apply this at an individual, family and community / population level. Students will be able to identify significant health issues in Australia across all developmental, gender, indigenous and rural health populations. Students in this course will develop critical thinking skills by exploring how a determinant's approach can be incorporated into their practice.
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of health and illness across the lifespan within contemporary health care approaches in Australia (including health promotion and illness prevention) and identify determinants of health which may influence the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities
- Demonstrate an understanding of purposes for utilising a holistic care approach when promoting health and supporting individuals who are living with illness
- Demonstrate an understanding of a collaborative health team approach when promoting health and supporting individuals who are living with illness
- Demonstrate ethical research, enquiry and writing skills by locating, retrieving and utilizing appropriate literature from a variety of sources to examine significant health issues within Australia

- This will be an online exam. Students will be provided further instruction regarding the exam by their course examiner via StudyDesk. The examination date will be available via UConnect when the Alternate Assessment Schedule has been released.
Important assessment information
It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Engagement in online discussion forums forms part of the directed study component of this course.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete the examination students must achieve at least 40% of the marks available. To satisfactorily complete all other assessment students must attempt these the assessment items and achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for each item.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2021 are:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the marks available for that assessment item.
Requirements after S1 2021:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the marks available for that assessment item. Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks. To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents/14749PL (point 4.4.2).
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.
Requirements after S1 2021:
Exams in this course are closed. Candidates are allowed access only to writing materials.
Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
Normally Deferred and Supplementary Examinations are held in the next Examination period. In S1 2021 selected courses will pilot an early Deferred and Supplementary Examination period held within 30 business days of results release.
