Rationale

This course will provide students with an understanding of the effects of acute and chronic exercise on the physiological systems. This will enable students to evaluate, improve and maintain the health and fitness, well-being and performance of an individual The course will prepare students who want to work as an exercise scientist or clinical exercise physiologists, or who want to advance to further study in sport and exercise.

Synopsis

The course will build upon the knowledge developed from previous courses in human anatomy and physiology and will apply those principles in studying how the physiological systems respond to acute and chronic stressors in sport and exercise. The knowledge obtained will be applied to evaluate, improve and maintain health, fitness and sports performance. Practical and technical skills, and skills in reading, reporting and evaluating research in sport and exercise physiology will be gained.

This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students at the Ipswich Campus and mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes for on-campus students.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Describe the function, regulation and interaction of physiological systems relating to exercise.
  2. Describe the individual and integrated physiological responses and adaptations to acute and chronic exercise under normal conditions, in different environments, and by external influences (e.g. ergogenic aids or technologies).
  3. Apply and evaluate knowledge of the physiological responses and adaptations to acute and chronic sport and exercise to provide a justification for the delivery of exercise programs to improve and maintain health, fitness and sports performance.
  4. Analyse and interpret physiological data obtained during acute exercise, and compare such data between time points, individuals and populations.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    External students must attend the mandatory residential school and on-campus students must attend the mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes. It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete each assignment a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for each item. To satisfactorily complete the examination a student must achieve at least 40% of the marks for the exam. To satisfactorily complete the course a student must attend and participate at least 80% of the laboratories.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2021 are:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. To satisfactorily complete the laboratory/residential school requirement a student must attend and participate at least 80% of the laboratories/residential school.


    Requirements after S1 2021:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the marks available for that assessment item. To satisfactorily complete the laboratory/residential school requirement a student must attend and participate at least 80% of the laboratories/residential school.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents/14749PL (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks (or grades) obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S1 2021 are:
    An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.

    Requirements after S1 2021:
    A RESTRICTED 2 hour exam will consist of multiple choice, short and long answer questions covering all the material. Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are:
    1. writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination);
    2. calculators which cannot hold textual information;
    3. English language dictionary.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Normally Deferred and Supplementary Examinations are held in the next Examination period. In S1 2021 selected courses will pilot an early Deferred and Supplementary Examination period held within 30 business days of results release. Assessment notes

  1. Students must familiarise themselves with the USQ Assessment Procedures (http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents.php?id=14749PL).

  2. If electronic submission is specified for a course assessment, students will be notified of this on the Course Study Desk. The due date for an electronically submitted assessment is the date by which a student must electronically submit the assignment irrespective of holidays. The assignment files must be submitted by 11.55pm on the due date using USQ time (as displayed on the clock on the course home page; that is, Australian Eastern Standard Time).

  3. If hardcopy submission is specified for a course assessment students will be notified of this on the Course Study Desk. The due date for a hardcopy assignment is the date by which a student must submit at USQ or despatch the assignment to USQ irrespective of holidays.

  4. USQ will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile or email unless expressly requested by the course examiner.

  5. Referencing in Assignments must comply with the APA referencing system. This system should be used by students to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work.   6. As part of the mandatory residential school, students may be expected to complete a combination of laboratories, practical classes and assessment as advised by the course examiner.

  2. professional accreditation standards of Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

  2. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in this course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect the same grades as those students who do possess them.

  3. Students undertaking this course in external mode will be expected to attend a residential school at the Ipswich Campus to completed practical aspects related to the course. This will involve 30 hours of necessary practical work over a four day period to successfully complete the course.
