As with the learning of any language, as confidence with the English language grows, it is important that students are provided with the opportunity to be challenged with more difficult tasks. This course aims to further develop students' language skills and strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking to a level where they can apply their language skills to longer, more complex material and tasks that help build confidence and prepare students to proceed to the Intermediate Level.

The Pre-Intermediate course presents different themes such as work, leisure, daily routines, holidays, geography, health and culture around which a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are introduced and practised. The four macro skills are developed through role play and information gap questionnaires, pronunciation, dictation, listening for gist, specific information and detail, skimming, scanning, and reading for gist and detail, writing sentences and paragraphs. Directed self-study at the Pre-Intermediate level consolidates and extends students' ability to become more autonomous learners.

Course learning outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Transfer awareness of paragraph structure to the ability to use this structure to produce written texts.
  2. Apply increased levels of grammar comprehension into spoken and written texts.
  3. Engage in a wide range of social activities using reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
  4. Analyse and respond to familiar and unfamiliar written and spoken texts.
  5. Use academic skills to enhance understanding of spoken and written material.
  6. Communicate awareness of how to improve identified areas of difficulty.

Write paragraphs on familiar topics that include topic sentences, supporting sentences and conclusions.

3. Listening skills:
Listen to selected texts on familiar topics to obtain a general sense of meaning.
Respond appropriately to question prompts.
Listen and identify information in dialogues and short lectures.
Make notes and match information while listening to a conversation or monologue.
4. Speaking skills:
Understand and use more advanced grammatical forms in speaking.
Make the listener understand what is being communicated.
Carry out increasingly more demanding social activities, such as describing people, talking about jobs and careers, comparing photos or films, discussing historical or cultural events, agreeing/disagreeing.
Recognise areas of pronunciation that are proving difficult and work to improve them.
