Pre-requisite or Co-requisite: CDS2000 and HSW2120. Students must have completed at least 4 courses before undertaking placement.
Good professional practice cannot be acquired through classroom teaching, skills building or fieldwork placement alone. It is important that the different forms of educational experience inform each other. The first fieldwork placement course offers students the opportunity to gain insight into human services approaches and practice methods relevant to the sector. It also gives students an opportunity to integrate theory with practice through the development and application of skills such as case work, critical analysis and program/project evaluation.
The course offers students the opportunity to undertake placements with human services organisations working with different client groups. Examples of placement organisations include aged care, community organisation, Cultural and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) associations, and volunteer groups and so on. Students work closely with their agency supervisors to develop and adhere to a learning plan that includes attributes such as ethical practice, confidentiality, cultural awareness and professional development. The placement allows students to gain insight into the skills required for working and interacting with clients, communicating effectively with stakeholders and managing day to day functioning.
Course learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
- Display an introductory level knowledge regarding the integration of the academic and practice base for human services by gaining insight into the field placement agency’s structure and mission and role in contemporary society;
- Access and interpret ethical, knowledge and skills-based frameworks associated with beginning human services practice;
- Access and comprehend professional and ethical standards appropriate to the relevant human services agency and apply these standards while making observations and interacting with stakeholders (where applicable);
- Develop early-stage academic enquiry skills and appropriate written and professional literacy via application of ethical standards to research and practice;
- Develop and show role-congruent practical community welfare and development-based techniques, including communication, teamwork, organisation and time management;
- Demonstrate contextually appropriate interpersonal skills and the capacity to develop constructive relationships with all relevant stakeholders including supervisors, staff, and clients to facilitate work towards mutually understood and negotiated goals.

Student workload expectations
To do well in this subject, students are expected to commit approximately 10 hours per week including class contact hours, independent study, and all assessment tasks. If you are undertaking additional activities, which may include placements and residential schools, the weekly workload hours may vary.
