EDP4140 Second Language Learning and Pedagogy

Synopsis

This course is designed to introduce students to what language is, how meaning is realised in language use and how it operates in mainstream learning environments in English. In this course, knowledge of cognitive processes involved in acquiring and using English, strategies for additional language learning and tools for enhancing the communicative competence of culturally diverse home backgrounds of learners in the classroom provide the focus of study. Social and cultural factors affecting language identity, development and communication is experienced through theory and practice. The sequencing and integration of learning activities through the macro skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing alongside grammar and vocabulary are established and applied to a content discipline unit of work in the Australian curriculum. Students become familiar with the potential needs of second language learners, ESL Bandscales, as they develop resources and learning activities for professional use. Information Literacy will be developed through exploration of Internet sites including Education Queensland Internet resources, ACARA and professional ESL networks in Australia and abroad, and readings focusing upon principles and educational practice in English as an Additional Language (EAL).
