Synopsis

This course provides instruction on all levels of editing. It builds on knowledge of copyediting and proofreading to incorporate more substantive aspects of editing. Editorial requirements for a variety of text types will be covered, for example educational and academic texts, non-fiction, fiction, promotional brochures and text designed to be presented in a variety of screen-based formats. Structural editing looks at the overall intent and content of a manuscript. This course introduces various techniques to improve the balance and flow of a text. Students will develop abilities to assess the suitability of language levels for different audiences, and recommend suitable additions to complement the text, from glossaries and indexes to images and graphical material as well as hypertext features and audio-visual components. Consideration of scheduling incorporates in-house planning and budgeting as well as issues related to freelance editing practice, principally costing and quoting. An online discussion group provides a means of raising and debating issues, sharing resources and broadening awareness of current developments.
