EDX1450 HPE Curriculum and Pedagogy

Synopsis

This course explores pedagogical and curriculum considerations for teaching the current Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum. In doing so it provides a range of understandings and competencies for interpreting and managing the HPE environment for teaching and learning. This course presents an overview of the concepts, philosophy, language and culture of HPE. Central to understanding the curriculum is the tenet of an inclusive curriculum that seeks to enhance the learning opportunities for all children and incorporates the social justice principles of equity, diversity and supportive environments.

There is a particular focus on developing competencies needed for planning and teaching, based on appropriate pedagogical practices. The design of relevant learning experiences aligned with assessment processes; management of classes and environments; integration of cross curriculum priorities and general capabilities into the teaching and learning context, and the impact of these considerations on the enacted curriculum are examined. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practise skills and develop confidence in effective teaching practices specifically related to teaching HPE. It is expected that students will become increasingly independent and reflective practitioners.
