The final decades of the eighteenth century and the early decades of the nineteenth century were a time not only of radical changes in politics, literature, art, ideas and everyday life, but also of a conservative reaction to those changes. This course examines British and American literature of the period in its social contexts, focusing on the relationships between literary form and ideology, and the paradoxical claims for romantic literature as a product of individual genius that would legislate for society in a time of change.
