Student contribution band : Band 1
ASCED code : 079900 - Other Education

This course will provide insight into and aspects of the knowledge necessary for successful and respectful engagement with Indigenous communities generally and Australian Indigenous communities more specifically. Topics to be covered include research and other community engagement protocols, engaging with community knowledge, developing mutually productive relationships, securing access to and enacting respectful departure from communities, cultural & intellectual property issues, and community advocacy strategies. The course adopts the perspective of the importance, in an era of reconciliation, of non-Indigenous engagement in Indigenous communities proceeding from a base of respect and collaboration. It will address in brief various discourses of deficit, and looks to provide the student with more culturally appropriate, respectful, and productive orientations than those that currently fall from a dominant discourse of intervention and repair. As such, the course is rooted in a post-development and decolonial frame of reference.
