Synopsis

This course will establish foundational knowledge to provide a solid paramedic skill set that is essential to the role of paramedics. Students will have the opportunity examine the history of pre-hospital care, structure and function of ambulance services in Australia and internationally, and the role of paramedics within the health care system. Additionally, students will develop a solid paramedic skill set of the function and operation of standard ambulance equipment and protocols. Students will also learn the importance of infection control through the use of universal precautions and personal protective equipment, as well as developing safe manual handling techniques. This course will enable students to be exposed to common medical terminology and approved medical abbreviations that will develop a communication style suitable for the healthcare environment strengthen their role in the broader healthcare team.
