Synopsis

The purpose of the course is to enable students to gain experience developing real-world advanced interactive data visualisations using emergent Web technology. As such this advanced course builds on existing web development skills, especially Javascript programming.

To support the programming-oriented goal, students will learn basic explorative data analysis to gain understanding of the problem domain and create a story relevant to the data set being visualised. An overview of visual perception and design then provides a basis for making key decisions on effective story telling. The appropriate use of existing visualisation techniques ranging from tables and graphs to complex trees and networks is studied to further build an understanding of what makes a solution effective.

Finally, the dimension of interactivity is added to raise skills to the current state-of-the-art.
