Synopsis

This course provides a critical historical overview of major thrusts of colonial and Australian government views and policies on the education of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples in order to provide a base for the development of a deeper understanding of current issues and challenges facing both Australian Indigenous communities, and various government and nongovernment agencies, responsible for the provision of education services to those communities. Further, the course explores the tension between cultural [`traditional'] and formal [`Western'] education imperatives and looks at some potentially positive developments in the area of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples' education. Major contemporary issues, including Closing the Gap, the Northern Territory Emergency Response [`the Intervention'], the role of bilingual education, and the role and impact of standardized educational testing on Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students, will be explored.
