This course aims to assist students to adapt new knowledge and skills relating to education law to the school management environment. Graduates of this course will gain confidence in identifying possible legal problems before and as they arise based on their knowledge of various statutory, contractual and common law duties, especially the duty to take reasonable care, which underpin the educational process. Students will be challenged to critically examine and evaluate the legal rights and obligations of various stakeholders, including students and parents, educators and administrators associated with the role of managing schools. To promote the development of practical skills, students will be encouraged to use a professional and ethical approach to problem solving and, to share their own experience and valued knowledge with others in the course. Participants will also gain a better understanding of the legal system in Australia, the role of lawyers, when to involve them, and how to work most effectively with them.
