Publishing Studies is a discrete scholarly discipline focused on the culture, practice and business of book production, distribution, publication and reception. The focus is not on the written word, as with English Literature and Creative Writing, but on all the social, cultural and economic practices that go on around books. Students in this course will explore topics as diverse as book history, writers' festivals and literary events, literary awards and grants, banned books, censorship, fan communities, new publishing technologies, self-publishing, and the role of class, race, gender or sexuality in publishing or book culture. A major component of the assessment for this course is the completion of a research project (essay) on a topic of the students' choosing.
