This 2-unit Honours seminar course covers current debates and approaches in the scholarship of English Literature for academic and professional purposes. The course is delivered in two streams - one practical and one theoretical - via online delivery through weekly readings, activities, and group discussion forums. The theoretical stream provides coverage of important theories of literature and a number of current debates, and students will develop strategies for engaging in and shaping future directions for theory. The practical stream focuses on critical readings of a number of literary texts, using established reading approaches and professional techniques for producing publishable literary criticism and higher degree research in this field. The two streams culminate in a major assessment item in which students will prepare an innovative reading of a major literary work as an application of their ideas for new directions in theory.
