Students will explore the most common and pervasive mental illnesses burdening Australian society such as depression and suicide, substance-related disorders, and anxiety. Additionally, the nursing assessment and care of people with serious mental illness such as psychoses, affective disorders, thought disorders, and eating disorders will be introduced. The mental health needs of persons of diverse ages, from child hood to older adults, and those living in urban to rural communities will also be explored in order to be able to adapt approaches and understand resources and delivery models. Students will develop an understanding of the individual experience of mental illness, its symptomatology and evidence-based interventions including pharmacological and other therapeutic measures.
