COVID-19 student communication

The Queensland Government has announced today that residents living in the Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton and Redlands areas will be required to stay home from Friday 8 January 6.00pm until Monday 11 January 6.00pm. This is to minimise the risk of community transmission of the UK strain of COVID-19. As a result of this advice, the University's Springfield and Ipswich campuses will be closed from today, Friday 8 January 4.00pm, and will re-open on Tuesday 12 January, unless otherwise advised by Queensland Health. Please note that the inter-campus shuttle buses will not be operating on Monday. Any impacted students must follow the Government advice. For example, student residents in the Greater Brisbane area cannot travel to the USQ Toowoomba campus. Students with scheduled Residential Schools, placements, or other on-campus learning activities commencing next week, will receive specific information today about any changes to planned activities. Students should also follow any additional advice received from their placement provider, including students currently on placement. If you have any symptoms at all, get tested immediately and quarantine at home until you receive a negative result. You can find your nearest testing facility on the interactive map available on the Queensland Health website. This is a rapidly evolving situation, and we will be providing regular updates via email, and Studying during COVID-19 website, to keep you informed of the University's response to the Queensland Health advice. Support for you If you have questions or need advice, the iconnect team is here to support you via Zoom and chat, or you can join the supportive USQ iconnect Facebook group. The Health and Wellness Team are also available to support you at this time with a range of resources. Research students are encouraged to contact the Graduate Research School team at grs@usq.edu.au. Welcome to the new year! I hope you had a restful and pleasant break over the holiday period and are staying safe. In relation to the evolving situation of COVID-19 cases in Victoria and New South Wales, we have received updated advice from Queensland Health. If you have returned to Queensland from Victoria since 21 December 2020, you should get tested immediately and quarantine at home or in your accommodation, until you receive a negative COVID-19 test result in Queensland. The Queensland Chief Health Officer has issued three new public health directives, effective from 4 January, that apply to students undertaking placements in aged care and disability accommodation service settings. If you have returned to Queensland from Victoria since 21 December 2020 and are currently on a clinical, aged care or disability accommodation services placement in Queensland, please:
If you are in this category and due to commence a placement in January 2021, please contact HES.support@usq.edu.au for further advice. Students should follow any additional advice received from their placement provider. If you are located in, or are entering Queensland, you can access a full list of COVID-19 testing locations on the Queensland Health website. If you are feeling unwell or experiencing any symptoms, please self-isolate and arrange for a test as a matter of urgency. Please do not attend campus, or your clinical placement, if you are unwell. Support for you If you have questions or need help with your Semester One enrolment, the iconnect team is here to support you via Zoom and chat, or you can join the supportive USQ iconnect Facebook group. With the continued uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University is extending the opportunity for you to access grade concessions and online assignment extension requests in Semesters 2 and 3 of 2020. Grade Concessions in 2020 The grade concessions introduced in Semester 1 are now available to you for the remainder of 2020. This means that if your final grade does not reflect your usual high achievement in Semester 2 or 3 of 2020, you can request to have this recorded as a Pass - Not Contributing to GPA (PC). If you do not pass in Semester 2 or 3 in 2020, your grade will automatically be excluded from the calculation of your GPA and will be recorded as a Fail - Not contributing to GPA (FC). You can find out more on the COVID-19 Student Support Package page. Assignment extensions To ensure your assignment extension requests are actioned as quickly as possible, you continue to have access to the Assignment Extension Request Form. Short extensions to the assignment deadline of up to five days can be requested by providing us with a short statement outlining the circumstances that are preventing you from submitting your assignment on time. We understand that sometimes unexpected events occur prior to due dates, however, we strongly advise you to submit your application at least 24 hours prior to the deadline, as this will help ensure a decision on your application can be made prior to the deadline. Support for you In addition to these measures, the University offers a range of services to support you, including:
Contact us If you have any questions, the iconnect team are here to support you via Zoom and Live Chat from Monday to Thursday 8 am - 8 pm, Fridays 8 am - 5 pm and on weekends from 12pm - 5pm. As you may be aware, three new COVID-19 cases have today been identified in Queensland. Contact tracing has commenced across a number of suburbs on Brisbane's southside, including a Springfield restaurant. Late this afternoon the Queensland Government released their current contact tracing alerts. Please check now to see if you were in the identified areas within the prescribed timeframes. If you were, please immediately self-quarantine and do not attend campus. If you are feeling unwell, we recommend that you self-isolate and get tested as soon as possible. Please follow Government health advice and advise USQ through this confidential form. As you know, we have made numerous changes to our campuses in order to make them COVIDSafe and ask that you continue to follow the health advice provided by the Queensland Government, including social distancing and good hygiene practices. Unless you have been otherwise notified, classes will continue as scheduled for now. Queensland Health advises that if you have not been to the identified locations, remain alert but not alarmed. Thank you for persisting with your studies during these unprecedented times. I know that the last few weeks have been extra-challenging, and I also know that the investment you are making in your learning and your future is important to you, your family and community, now more than ever. I want to acknowledge the commitment you have made to continue with your studies over the past 12 weeks as we head towards the end of Semester 1. No one could have imagined how Semester 1 would turn out and your grit and determination to persevere is testament to your abilities and an achievement you should be proud of. I am writing to provide you with an update on our planning for teaching and learning in Semester 2. The University's aim, as always, is to support you to confidently continue and complete your studies and to ensure that you have the information you need to make decisions about your future study. We continue to monitor and be informed by the latest Queensland and Australian Government advice and will proceed cautiously with our return to campus plans to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and the wider community. While we have seen the recent easing of some restrictions, it is unlikely that public health requirements and expectations, such as travel restrictions, social distancing and hygiene measures, will be lifted in the foreseeable future. Last week, the Australian and Queensland Governments released three stage COVID-19 Recovery plans and the University will also adopt a phased approach to returning to campus-based activities. As indicated by the Queensland Government’s roadmap, we are investigating how we can open spaces for students to access computers consistent with Stage 1 and 2 guidelines. We are also planning to reopen our Library study spaces during Stage 3. Social distancing and hygiene requirements will remain in place through all stages of our return to on-campus activities and into the foreseeable future. All students and staff will need to be aware of and adopt these practices while on campus. Semester 2, 2020 At this stage, the University anticipates plans for Semester 2, beginning 13 July, will include the following:
Please be assured that any changes to Semester 2 assessment items will be communicated to you as early as possible in the semester to ensure that all assessment can be conducted in safe ways that meet COVID-19 transmission prevention guidelines. To: All students | From: PVC (Students) | Subject: USQ | Update on COVID-19 | |
This morning the Prime Minister announced further social distancing measures. I am writing to reassure you that USQ is ready and able to meet the challenges ahead, to ensure that your hard work will result in that life-changing qualification. USQ is a specialist in providing the online and flexible study and support options you will need to complete your studies in the weeks and months ahead as COVID-19 spreads. You still have access to our online student support and services. You will still have the option to access our campus facilities, including the libraries, provided you abide by strict hygiene requirements and practice social distancing. From Monday 23 March, a number of changes in support of your continued study success will be implemented. These changes will not impact your progression into future courses. Please note that the changes outlined below do not mean our campuses are closing. Rather, we're making it easier for you to complete your study in response to COVID-19. Further details are as follows: Lectures and tutorials From Monday 23 March, on-campus lectures and tutorials will be replaced by online experiences. Many of these online classes will be held according to the existing on-campus class timetable. Please regularly check your USQ email (UMail) and StudyDesk for information and updates about these classes. Practicals, Residential Schools, Studios and other face-to-face learning activities From Monday 23 March, in some courses, practicals, residential schools, studios and other face-to-face learning activities will be replaced by a non-face-to-face activity, allowing you to complete the course this semester. We are working through ways to support you on a course by course basis. Placements Professional placement courses will continue for most students enrolled in these courses. To date, most of our partners who provide placements are continuing to support these important learning activities. If for any reason, one of your scheduled placements is cancelled, it will be rescheduled to later in the year. In that scenario, you will be awarded an incomplete grade (IDM) at the end of first semester. This will not impact on your HECS or fee obligations, and the work you have completed to date will still contribute to your final grade in these courses. End of semester paper-based examinations We are working to replace the end of semester paper-based examinations with alternative forms of assessment that will not require you to attend campus or an examination centre. All changes will be finalised after the mid-semester break and will be posted on your course StudyDesk. Course specifications will be updated to reflect these changes if necessary. Requirements for assignment extensions From Monday 23 March, for Semester 1 assignments, you can seek an assignment extension of up to five working days on the basis of a written declaration of the circumstances preventing your on-time submission (rather than a medical certificate). You will not be asked to provide a medical certificate unless your assignment cannot be submitted within 5 working days of the due date. Requests for assignment extensions must be received at least one full day before the due date of the assessment item. Further information on a new process for requesting assignment extensions will shortly be available on course StudyDesk. The decisions above are designed to keep you and your networks of family and friends as safe as possible. They mean you can confidently continue with your studies and remain connected to USQ's student support services while reducing your exposure to COVID-19. These decisions are based on the latest health advice, the need for social distancing, and USQ's long and proud history as a distance and online higher education provider. The specific details about changes that affect your courses will be provided on your course StudyDesk. Please check regularly for updates. If you would like more information in the meantime, please contact our student support team. We also have a list of FAQs on our website. If you think you have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus, please follow the self-isolation instructions and seek medical advice by contacting your General Practitioner or the USQ Health and Wellness Team by emailing student.success@usq.edu.au or by phoning +61 7 4631 2372. Please do not attend campus, placements, or travel on the inter-campus shuttle bus. I apologise for the disruptions these changes will cause for many of you, including those of you who have already made arrangements to come to Campus for Residential Schools and similar activities in the weeks ahead. I hope you understand these decisions are being made with your best interests at heart, and within a rapidly changing public health environment. Please remember, if you are unwell, you must stay home. Take care. Your health, safety and success are our top priorities. Regards Josh Pienaar |

USQ is continuing to monitor, review and adhere closely to the regular advice being received from health authorities and are approaching the issue with the highest degree of care. The Commonwealth Department of Health provides regular updates on the status of cases within Australia and broader public health activities. You can review these updates here. Public health issues can be of great concern across the community and have the potential to create distress and anxiety. It is important to remain informed and be mindful of the challenges impacted members of our community within and outside of Australia are experiencing. As always, USQ stands with and continues to support impacted communities. What we are doing? The University's incident management group has been meeting daily to assess and manage potential impacts on students and staff and to implement a range of actions to ensure the University's preparedness to respond to any changes in the situation. The safety of our staff and students is paramount and we are committed to keeping you informed about USQ's response. Across the past week, we have made a number of updates to FAQs and general information regarding the potential impact of changed arrangements for return to study and work. This includes communicating government-imposed travel restrictions, offering ongoing support to impacted staff through flexible work arrangements, and working closely with our affected students to provide flexible study options that facilitates their continued study at USQ. We have also been reviewing and making decisions about future travel arrangements for USQ staff and students in consultation with travellers and in line with travel advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provided on Smartraveller. Please contact the Travel Office for advice around planned international travel. USQ has commenced preparing self-isolation facilities for impacted USQ students within Concannon College on our Toowoomba campus, in the unlikely event of future need. USQ is currently communicating with students across our Residential Colleges to keep them informed and answer any questions, for what remains a preparedness-only measure. To enable safe hygiene practices, USQ has commenced installing liquid hand sanitiser stations in high traffic areas across all campuses. In addition to the sanitiser stations, personal hand sanitiser will continue to be made available at main reception locations across all USQ campuses. What should you continue to do? As a community we should be aware that for some of our students, staff and families this remains a difficult and distressing time. Here are some things that you can do to help:
Please contact Student Support via email usq.support@usq.edu.au or call +61 7 4631 2285 or 1800 007 252 (within Australia only) to discuss options through which we can support your continued study. If you have any health concerns, please contact your local GP or USQ Health Service (+61 7 4631 2372). Make sure you call in advance to explain your symptoms and travel history. USQ will continue to provide updates for students as new information becomes available. As this is an evolving situation we have established dedicated webpage to provide you with regular updates. USQ is committed to the ongoing safety of staff, students and our local communities. The University's management team continues to monitor and review regular advice from health authorities in relation to the novel coronavirus. As has been recently reported in the media, Queensland now has two confirmed cases of novel coronavirus. USQ is making some new arrangements for some students and staff returning to work or study in the coming weeks. Students or staff who have travelled to China (including Hong Kong) should not attend study or work on-campus for 14 days after leaving that country. The University suggests that you follow Queensland Health advice to self-isolate during that period. If you have been in contact with any confirmed novel coronavirus cases, you should follow Queensland Health advice to self-isolate for 14 days following exposure, and not attend study or work on-campus during that period. If you have any health concerns, please contact your local GP or USQ Health Service (+61 7 4631 2372). Make sure you call in advance to explain your symptoms and travel history.
