Program aims

This program aims to produce high quality health professionals who are able to contribute to public health practice and research. An integrated approach to teaching the five main public health disciplines: biostatistics; epidemiology; environmental health; health policy and management; and social and behavioural sciences; are taught in four core courses. Upon completion of the program students will have knowledge and skills of the CAPHIA foundational competencies: health monitoring and surveillance; disease prevention and control; health promotion; health protection; health policy, planning and management (health systems); and evidence-based professional population health practice. Each of the core courses includes the topics related to public health by scaffolding the content and complexity of knowledge and outcomes. Thus starting with fundamental and basic knowledge in the first course and scaffolding to more advanced and complex outcomes in the fourth core-course.

Program objectives

On completion of the program, graduates should be able to:

  1. Select and critically apply an evidence-based approach to public health practice and research.

  2. Critically evaluate the scope of contemporary public health practice within an interdisciplinary context and apply critical reflection in practice.

  3. Function effectively as a team member including behaving in an ethical and culturally safe manner when interacting with clients, other professionals and the broader community.

  4. Communicate ways of working respectfully and collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities in public health practice, and culturally and linguistically diverse peoples and communities.

  5. Strategically utilise specialised skills and advanced theoretical knowledge to analyse, evaluate and communicate complex health information.

  6. Apply specialised skills and theoretical knowledge to detect, prevent and control communicable and non-communicable diseases among human populations.

  7. Critically appraise, synthesise and apply relevant health promotion and health protection concepts and knowledge to promote population health through mediating, advocating, and enabling changes in behavioural, social, economic, cultural and physical environments.

  8. Promote efficient and equitable gains in population health by developing appropriate policy, legislation, regulation, governance and/or fiscal measures.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

This program is at AQF Qualification Level 09. Graduates at this level will have specialised knowledge and skills for research, and/or professional practice and/or further learning.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Completion of a three-year or four-year bachelor degree in the area of health, or equivalent, with a GPA > 4.8;
    OR

  • Completion of a university three-year or four-year bachelor degree in a different discipline with a GPA > 4.8, and completion of one year of full-time work experience in a healthcare setting;
    OR

  • Graduate Certificate of Public Health or Graduate Diploma of Public Health with a GPA > 4.8.

  • English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 4.


All students are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements.

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a University-approved English language program. On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

Requirements for professional experience placements

Practical experience is an integral component of the program and each student is required to undertake and satisfactorily complete 200 hours of practical experience. Progression into practical courses is dependent upon a pass grade in theoretical and other practical courses which have been set as prerequisites. Applicants must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the University of Southern Queensland for practical placement. Please refer to the applicable Professional Practice Experience Handbook for Master of Public Health Students.

Program fees

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of a students' higher education and students pay a student contribution amount, which varies depending on the courses undertaken. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

Commonwealth Supported students may be eligible to defer their fees through a Government loan called HECS-HELP.

Domestic full fee paying place

Domestic full fee paying places are funded entirely through the full fees paid by the student. Full fees vary depending on the courses that are taken. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

Domestic full fee paying students may be eligible to defer their fees through a Government loan called FEE-HELP provided they meet the residency and citizenship requirements.

Australian citizens, Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders, Permanent Resident visa holders and New Zealand citizens who will be resident outside Australia for the duration of their program pay full tuition fees and are not eligible for FEE-Help.

International full fee paying place

International students pay full fees. Full fees vary depending on the courses that are taken and whether they are studied on-campus, via distance education/online. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the Course Fee Finder.

Residential schools

The attendance requirement of residential schools within this degree is indicated by the following letters: V = Voluntary; O = Optional; C = Compulsory; R = Recommended; HR = Highly Recommended; M = Mandatory. Students are required to attend two (2) mandatory residential schools on the Ipswich campus. The residential schools will be held Friday to Sunday to accommodate students who are employed.

Exit points

Students may exit with a GCPU Graduate Certificate of Public Health provided they have met the requirements within the program structure of the GCPU Graduate Certificate of Public Health.

Students may exit with a GDPH Graduate Diploma of Public Health provided they have met the requirements within the program structure of the GDPH Graduate Diploma of Public Health
