Download and Print: 3D Printing and Decentralised Open Manufacturing

In April this year, there was a worldwide PPE shortage in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Around the world, makers stepped up and began 3D printing and laser cutting face shields for healthcare workers. In the Toowoomba area, the USQ Makerspace championed a team who created 370 face shields for aged care, hospitals and healthcare workers. Projects like these are a great example of how open manufacturing processes can allow us to fill supply chain needs quickly. Hear about the face shields project and the future of open manufacturing with projects like 3D printed furniture, spare parts and more.

Gems and Nuggets: The value of open assessment for opening up higher education

Open assessment is a valuable way of enhancing student engagement and participation in higher education, but to date, it has not been widely used in Australia. This presentation discusses open assessment and its value for student agency, equity and inclusion. Open assessment is illustrated by a case study from the School of Education at the University of Southern Queensland utilising the open publishing platform, Pressbooks. As part of their course assessment, undergraduate students enrolled in an intercultural education course created resources for the early years profession resulting in the open resource Gems and Nuggets. We discuss the benefits and the drawbacks of the process, and argue that open, authentic and renewable assessments have the potential to increase diverse student participation and engagement in higher education. The presentation concludes with implications for higher educational practice and future research.
