Finalists announced for the 2017 USQ Alumnus of the Year Awards

The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is proud to announce the 2017 finalists for the USQ Alumnus of the Year Awards.

USQ, which first opened its doors as the Queensland Institute of Technology (Darling Downs) in 1967, has proudly graduated close to 100,000 students in its rich 50 year history.

This year’s awards finalists represent a wide range of high achieving graduates from across a number of fields and community groups worldwide.

USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Janet Verbyla said the finalists embody many of the values and pillars of the University.

“USQ prides itself not only on the academic, professional and research successes of our alumni, but also on their community involvement and active participation towards a more sustainable future,” she said.

“This year’s finalists are of the highest standard and choosing a winner in many of the categories will be challenging due to the calibre of the nominations.”

The 2017 finalists, in alphabetical order, are:
• Dr Tracey Brickell (Master of Psychology, 2000; Doctor of Psychology, 2003)
• Mr Geoff Brown AO (Bachelor of Engineering, 1979)
• Dr Kevin Carmody (Bachelor of Arts, 1980)
• Mr Brett Cumming (Master of Applied Linguistics, 2010; Master of Education, 2013; Master of Education (TESOL), 2016)
• Mr Shane Elson (Bachelor of Engineering Technology, 2001)
• Mr David Fairman (Master of Project Management, 2007; Master of Business Administration, 2009)
• Mr Michael Hayes (Master of Professional Studies, 2012)
• Mr Mark Jamieson (Bachelor of Business, 1996)
• Miss Allysha Jensen (Bachelor of Nursing, 2013)
• Mr Suresh Muttiah (Postgraduate Certificate in Business, 2010; Master of Business Administration, 2011)
• Miss Penelope Twemlow (Master of Project Management and Master of Business Administration, 2010)
• Ms Cara-Ann Simpson (Bachelor of Visual Arts, 2008; Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours), 2009)

Winners of the 2017 USQ Alumnus of the Year Awards will be announced at an awards breakfast held at the USQ Toowoomba refectory on Friday, 25 August 2017.

The overall 2017 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award will also be presented at the event to one deserving finalist.
