A nod to the past with a focus on the future is the premise behind the University of Southern Queensland’s latest major renovation.

Member for Groom Garth Hamilton MP officially opened the new R Block, the refurbishment designed to benefit student experience at the Toowoomba Campus.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie said one of the University’s older buildings had been given a modern facelift, transforming it into a one-stop shop for students to enjoy and learn.

“This multimillion-dollar project focuses on the student experience at the heart of the campus,” Professor Mackenzie said.

“The space centres on iConnect as the first stop for students to campus - a place where they can interact with their peers, ask questions about study, share advice, celebrate wins, tackle challenges and support other students.

“Surrounding it is a variety of quiet, collaborative and computer-based study environments, as well as a student kitchenette and a new purpose-built space for a Bounce-tenanted café.

“The refurbishment reflects a vibrant and engaging campus and the high-quality student experience available at the University of Southern Queensland.”

Professor Mackenzie said underused space was overhauled to create a welcoming environment.

“This is a significant project for the University that will provide enhanced opportunities for engagement on the Toowoomba campus, both within the University and the wider Toowoomba community.”
