Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young PSM joined University of Southern Queensland Chancellor John Dornbusch and Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie for the official launch of the University’s 55/30 anniversary (55 years as an educational institution and 30 years as a university) and unveiling of ‘John Dornbusch Drive’.

Her Excellency, Dr Young said it was important to honour the history and in parallel to that, focus on the future of the University of Southern Queensland.

“This is a university where students, researchers, community, and partners access excellence - collaborating to share knowledge and create real, positive change for our people and our planet,” she said.

“The University of Southern Queensland is home to some of the most vibrant hubs of education excellence and research innovation in the world with exceptional credentials in research particularly across the areas of space and defence, agriculture, health and regional development.

“The commitments of staff, students and community members over 55 years have helped form what the University of Southern Queensland is today. A University that is innovative and committed to solving problems that matter, with local solutions to global challenges and inspiring and educating students worldwide.”

Professor Mackenzie said the Chancellor has made a significant impact at the University and it was honour to unveil the newly named drive after someone who has represented the University for so long and with so much passion.

“As head of the governing body of the University, the Council, John Dornbusch has been steadfast in his commitment to the University,” Professor Mackenzie said.

“He has served on the Council of the University of Southern Queensland for twenty-three years, twelve years as Chair of Finance and Facilities Committee and eight years as Deputy Chancellor before he was appointed Chancellor in March 2014.

“Throughout his tenure, the Chancellor has had a significant and positive influence on a number of major University initiatives such as the establishment of campuses at Springfield and Ipswich.

“The effort he makes in celebrating the successes of our students inspires us all and is testament to his devotion to the University community and we honour that dedication with this announcement.”

Mr Dornbusch was re-elected as Chancellor of the University of Southern Queensland for a further five year term through to 2024.
