Research on how genre influences author decisions around online platform building is significantly absent. This PhD project will fill this gap in knowledge by answering the question: To what extent does fiction genre affect the choice of online author platform? In order to explore this question, the following sub-questions have been identified: Do authors consider genre-specific challenges in their platform and publication? And, What strategies are authors using for their online author platforms? The scope of the research will be fantasy, romance, and historical fiction published by authors themselves. To address the research question, the project will employ a pragmatic research approach using mixed-methodology in a three-stage study involving survey, interview, and case studies.
