Polyamide 6 (PA6) is one of conventionally used plastic polymers with excellent mechanical, electrical and chemical properties. The inherent flammability of pristine PA6 restricted its practical applications regardless of the huge market demand. The most conventional method to prevent combustion of PA6 is addition of fire retardants (FRs). Two dominant FRs, phosphorus-containing fire retardants (P-FRs) and nitrogen-containing fire retardants (N-FRs) have imparted an outstanding flame retardancy to PA6. However, most of existing P/N-FRs are still not effective enough for PA6 due to improper molecular/structural design. Besides, there has been a lack of fundamental understanding of the relationship between the physical and chemical features of these P/N-FRs. It is desirable to gain an in-depth understanding of the correlation between chemical structures and their impacts on the microstructure, interfaces, processing, flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PA6. This research is aimed to develop several highly effective P/N-FRs and investigate their chemical structures and the impacts on comprehensive properties. In addition, it is intended to investigate the synergistic effect of as-designed FRs and existing FRs, such as ADP in PA6.
