This masterclass with briefly introduce different approaches to thematic analysis, before focusing on what is crucial to doing thematic analysis in a way consonant with qualitative research values and within a qualitative paradigm (aka Big Q). Specifically, we will focus on what this means in relation to how you report on your thematic analysis practice, and how to wrangle and resist conceptually incoherent demands from reviewers (especially Reviewer 2!) and editors.

Presenters:  

Professor Virginia Braun is based at The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Prof Braun’s research focuses on the relationship between the social, the scientific and the individual, in relation to bodies, sexuality and health. Her research examines the influence of culture and society on individual choices, thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, as well as on broader issues like public health policy and practice. Prof Braun is an expert in thematic analysis, with her co-authored paper with Associate Professor Victoria Clarke being cited over 125,000 times. 

Associate Professor Victoria Clarke is based at The University of the West of England, UK. Assoc Professor Clarke’s research focuses on the intersecting areas of qualitative and critical psychology, sexuality and gender, family and relationships, and appearance and embodiment. Assoc Professor Clarke is an expert in thematic analysis, with her co-authored paper with Professor Virginia Braun being cited over 125,000 times.
