Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (ICAS)

Please note: eligibility requirements for the Commonwealth Indigenous Scholarships have been broadened. Applications are now open for ALL undergraduate and postgraduate students, including those undertaking associate degrees and diplomas. Students who already hold a tertiary qualification are now eligible.

The Indigenous Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship financially assists Indigenous students on low incomes with higher education costs. This scholarship is aimed at students looking to undertake or already studying full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. The value of a Commonwealth Scholarship is NOT considered income for Centrelink purposes. The Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship is for Indigenous students from regional and remote areas who need to move away from home to undertake higher education.


$5,199 per year for up to four years.


To be eligible applicants must:

  • be Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • be an Australian Citizen
  • be enrolled in any undergraduate or postgraduate study at USQ
  • be from a low income background
  • have had to relocate from a regional or remote area in order to undertake study
  • be enrolled in a minimum of 3 study units in the on-campus mode per semester

Preference is given to those student who need to relocate from regional and remote areas.

A student is ineligible if they have come from an area belonging to the major city classification. 

How to apply

Incomplete applications cannot be processed. Make sure you have answered all questions and provided all supporting documents.

It is strongly recommended that you include a personal statement to ensure all of your circumstances are taken into consideration.

To apply for this Scholarship for Semester 1, 2017 applicants need to complete the USQ Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarship Application Form (PDF* 531KB) and post or deliver the application and all supporting documents to:
