Endings (suffixes) that change the form of words

  • A suffix is a group of letters that you add to the end of a root word. 
  • It changes the class or function of the word: 

adding suffixes like -ion or -ment to some verbs forms nouns; 

adding the suffix -al to certain nouns forms adjectives; and 

adding the suffix –ly to certain adjectives forms adverbs:

educate (v) education (n) educational (adj) educationally (adv)
