Words and phrases after the head noun

Prepositional phrases

  • Consist of a preposition followed by a noun or noun phrase (NP).
  • Add information to a noun about circumstances:

of = possession / belonging (the leg of the chair)

in, on, at = physical location (the chart on page 12)

  • You can use them instead of an adjective clause; for example, with + NP instead of a clause with have:

the city with the highest population = the city which has the highest population.
