When referencing

In our academic studies we need to acknowledge the ideas and words that we read.

  • We use quotation marks when we are using the exact words of what we have read:

According to Smith (2012): ‘This problem is rife in many third world countries’.

  • Whether you use single (‘ ’) or double (“ ”) quotation marks depends on the academic style of your faculty.
