Semi Colons and Colons
Colons before explanations (appositives)
- At the end of a sentence, a writer may wish to rename, or clarify, some of the word or words in the sentence using a noun phrase or an independent clause.
- Use a colon to introduce and emphasise an appositive:
Last night, we had our children’s favourite dinner: spaghetti bolognaise.
