Coordinating conjuctions

They allow you to join two ideas of equal importance. They also allow you to show that two ideas are related in a specific way:

There are 7 main co-ordinating conjunctions. They show different relationships:

  • for (adds a reason),
  • and (adds a similar idea),
  • nor (connects two negative ideas),
  • but (adds equal different ideas),
  • or (adds two equal ideas),
  • yet (adds two equal ideas with a surprising result), and
  • so (adds a result)
