# Measures of centre

### The median

The median is the middle score. It can be found by putting the data points in order from lowest to highest and finding the middle data point.

- If the number of data points is odd, then the median will be a exact value of the data.
- For example for the data points: \(11\), \(12\), \(14\), \(15\), \(18\), the median (middle number) is \(14\).
- It the number of data points is even, then the median will be the average of the middle two data points.
- For example for the data points: \(55\), \(55\), \(55\), \(55\), \(62\), \(65\), \(78\), \(99\), the middle two scores are \(55\) & \(62\), so the median will be \(58.5\).
- Used for quantitative data.
