The passive voice

How to form the past simple passive

  • You write the past simple passive voice by using the past form of the verb ‘to be’ plus the past participle of the main verb.

The player kicked the ball. (active voice, past simple)

The ball was kicked by the player. (passive voice, past simple of ‘to be’ + past participle of ‘to kick’)

Note:

The tense of the verb is shown by the form of the verb ‘to be’, not the past participle (-ed)
