Verb tenses in academic writing

Simple present tense

You use the simple present tense:

  • when quoting or paraphrasing from research

Smith (2009) states that…

  • for general facts and truths

The moon revolves around the earth.

  • for habits and routines

She visits her mother every Saturday afternoon.

  • for timetables or schedules

The bus leaves at 2p.m.

  • to show feelings, thoughts, appearance

They want to travel overseas next year.

He disagrees with you.

It seems to be the right choice.
