Overview

  • Accounting is a critical component of any company or institution. Accounting as a profession has seen a major shift in recent decades, from a strictly financial focus of economic accountability to a more complex role within business organisations and management.

  • If you want to become an accountant and already have a bachelor or 8-unit non-accounting master's degree, the Master of Professional Accounting will get you there. 
  • Through this master’s conversion program with an emphasis on practical experience, get thoroughly prepared for the accounting profession.

Professional accreditation

Graduates of the Master of Professional Accounting will meet the educational entrance requirements of both the CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), as long as a certain list of subjects are studied.

This provides Associate membership of CPA Australia, eligibility to study the CPA Australia professional exams and eligibility to study the CAANZ professional exams.

Successful completion of the Master of Professional Accounting can qualify students for exemptions from the Fundamental level (9 papers) of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) exams. For further details please refer to the ACCA website.

Career outcomes

  • You will graduate as a qualified accountant, your career opportunities may include public accountant, chartered accountant, company accountant, company secretary, financial administrator, investment advisor, forensic accountant, in the government (in the tax department, audit office, treasury and local government), or in financial institutions including banks and building societies.

Entry requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor degree, or equivalent, from a recognised institution.

Applicants without an acceptable bachelor degree, or equivalent, and who have completed a minimum of 5 years' professional work experience equivalent to an AQF level 7 qualification, may be eligible for entry into the Graduate Certificate of Business, and upon completion and achievement of a minimum GPA of 4.0, may apply for entry into the Master of Professional Accounting.

English language requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

If you have previously studied in your home country, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.
