Networking for success

Simon Playford is immersing himself in the world of law, aiming to learn as much as possible to further his career potential. Through networking as a member of The USQ Student Guild Board of Directors, Simon was able to gain a full-time position shortly after finishing a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business and Commerce at USQ. One of the Directors of the Board saw his potential and offered him a position as a graduate lawyer in a boutique law firm in regional QLD.

‘Don’t underestimate the power of networking, being well connected is vital. Employers really value your community involvement, and at USQ, the opportunities are bountiful.’

Simon has worked primarily in litigation, dispute resolution and property. The smaller firm’s culture has allowed him to spend more time being mentored by experienced lawyers.

‘I enjoy the diversity in the matters we handle. By working across a wide range of practice areas I am able to build a broad range of skills.’

Simon is excited to continue developing as a professional, expanding his network, and growing his career. Simon now heads up law firm, Bolter.

'I do not think that I would have been able to [achieve what I have] without that business degree.'

'I’m a 100 per cent believer in doubling up – plus how many graduates are in the market at the moment. You have to differentiate yourself as much as you can and show that you have more than just those educational skills.'
