Amy Granzien graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing in 2019 and says more than two years into her career, she still can’t fully express the impact being a recipient of a Nursing Clinical Placement Bursary has had on her.
“Without that financial help, I wouldn’t have been able to afford to go to Roma Hospital for my final clinical placement,” Amy said.
“I learned so much by going rural and now I’m working in a rural hospital and absolutely loving it. Being a rural nurse generalist, you get to experience all the same things as you would in a metro hospital, but you also get to learn a little about everything – and I think that’s amazing!”
Growing up in the Lockyer Valley, Amy originally started a biomedical science degree but changed to nursing in the search of a more hands-on career.
“I wanted to work in a role where I could listen to people and help them, rather than spend my time looking in a microscope,” she said.
“Studying nursing and having the opportunity to go rural for my final placement made me grow up so much and taught me a huge amount of independence. I’m proud of myself and how I’ve taken that experience into my career.”
Amy said that without the assistance of the Nursing Clinical Placement Bursary she would have had to work through weekends and not have got the most out of the experience.
“Like a lot of students, I wasn’t helped financially by anyone else but myself, so that financial assistance meant I didn’t have to drive back to Brisbane of a weekend to work in an effort to make ends meet while I was in Roma,” she said.
“It allowed me time to really enjoy my placement, get the most out of it and explore the local area.
“I hope these bursaries continue to be supported so future nurses can gain the knowledge and experience required to be able to share our passion and knowledge with others.”
Now working at the Oakey Hospital in Emergency and on the acute health ward, Amy has just completed a post graduate certificate in paediatric nursing and is working towards gaining a Master of Advanced Nursing Practice.
Since 2010, hundreds of nursing and midwifery alumni have been supported along their path to a nursing career through the Nursing Clinical Placement Bursary Fund. This bursary provides financial assistance for Nursing and Midwifery students attending rural or remote clinical placements away from their usual place of residence.
