If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please register your interest by completing the ITAS Tutor Registration Form. This is an expression of interest form only and does not guarantee work as an ITAS Tutor. Approval of tuition is based on a number of factors, including available funds and students’ educational needs.
Within this form, you will be asked to attach the following:
- Proof of identity (certified copy of your passport, or birth certificate and driver’s licence)
- Right to work documentation (Australian or NZ passport or Work Visa)
- Certified copies of your qualifications (e.g. academic transcripts)
- Resume/CV outlining any experience relevant to providing tuition, including to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
All tutors who work with minors (under 18 years of age) must have undertaken a Working with Children’s Check (PDF 224KB) and have been cleared to work with minors before tuition can commence.
Tutor eligibility
As a tutor, you must be qualified either through formal education or relevant experience to deliver tutoring specific to the needs of your assigned student. UniSQ students meeting the following eligibility requirements are welcome to apply to become a tutor:
- be at least two academic years ahead of your student
- be studying a major sequence of units in the subject area of your student
- be able to show evidence of sound academic progress.
Tutor responsibilities
The role of a tutor is to foster autonomy and independence by focussing on the development of the student’s academic skills and capacities to succeed independently of tutor assistance.
It is not your responsibility to:
- undertake research for the student
- edit or rewrite student work
- type up draft essays
- borrow book/s from the library or
- any other activity that could reasonably be conducted by the student.or that could compromise the originality of the student’s work.
If you are assigned to a student, you will be informed of the number of hours available for tuition. This is a maximum of two hours per subject per week during the teaching weeks of the study period however the total number of hours will depend on funding availability and how many subjects of tuition have been approved for the student.
Funding for the program requires all students and tutors to complete certain documentation, including an ITAS Personalised Learning Plan (PDF 207KB). The ITAS Personalised Learning Plan must be submitted within the first two (2) week of tutoring commencing.
You will also need to submit online pay claim/s in order to be paid for the hours of tuition you have completed.
Tutor evaluation
As a tutor you must complete a ITAS Tutor Evaluation Form after each study period which helps us improve the tutoring experience and assesses the effectiveness or need to change the program. The survey form will be emailed directly to you towards the end of the study period.
Cultural integrity training for tutors
Preference will be given to suitably qualified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tutors however non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are also welcome to apply. New non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tutors must complete mandatory on-line cultural integrity training. Training takes one hour and tutors will be paid for this time. The Certificate must be provided to CISER before a contract can be processed.
Conflict of interests
Before any contract can be approved, you must declare any conflict of interest or potential conflict of interest between the student and yourself. You must not be:
- immediately related to the student (by marriage or de facto relationship)
- the student's regular course lecturer or course examiner
- the student's employer or supervisor at work
- a close friend of the student.
