Professional accreditation

Upon graduation of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Computer Systems Engineering) you are eligible to apply for membership of Engineers Australia as a Graduate Professional Engineer. After further professional development, a graduate member with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) may apply for professional engineering (MIEAust), and with verifiable further industry experience then apply for Stage 1 Professional Engineer. With additional verifiable industry experience, you can apply for chartered status as a Professional Engineer and, when granted, may use the post-nominal MIEAust CPEng.

As an experienced MIEAust, you can apply for RPEQ or other Australian State legislated registration schemes, or as a chartered professional engineer be similarly accredited (RPEQ etc.) and apply for Australian National Engineering Registration. You will also have the opportunity to work overseas, with your accreditation recognised in those countries that are signatories to the Washington Accord.

Career outcomes

  • You will have the skills to pursue a variety of carers across the private and public sectors. Fields of work including network systems architect, data and performance analytics, software programming, hardware design, network engineering, system optimisation and cyber-security.

Starting uni in 2021?

If you want to start your studies in 2021, the format of subject pre-requisites will change slightly from previous years. ATAR will also replace OP for Queensland students who graduate from high school from 2020. Find out more about these changes to ensure you are prepared to apply.

  • Subject pre-requisites: English (Units 3 & 4, C), Mathematical Methods (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent
  • Recommended prior study: Physics (Units 3 & 4, C), or equivalent

Tafe (VET) qualification

If you have completed a qualification from a TAFE or qualified private provider, you may be able to use these qualifications to meet USQ's entry requirements.

Work and life experience

You may be able to use your work experience and other adjustment factors to increase your selection rank and meet USQ's entry requirements.

English language requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program.

Recognition of prior learning or work experience

You may be eligible for recognition of prior learning if you have previously studied or have relevant work experience. This will help to reduce the number of courses that you need to study to finish your program.

If you identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent you may be eligible to enter the Indigenous Higher Education (IHEPP) program.

Degree structure

To complete this degree students must complete 32 units. Most courses (similar to ‘subjects’) are valued at 1 unit. To study full-time you would usually complete 4 units per semester.

Professional experience

As part of your degree, you will need to complete a minimum of 60 days of professional experience. However, many USQ students are already employed in industries relevant to their studies and may be able to write up their existing work experience to meet this requirement. These experiences provide you with opportunities to put theory into practice.

All students must be able to meet the physical and other professional requirements of practical experience within this program.

Residential schools

This degree has a mandatory attendance requirement for some of the residential and practical school courses.

If you are enrolled in the External study mode in this degree it is mandatory you attend on-campus for professional practice based and technical residential schools, where you will attend face-to-face practicals and tutorials, use the facilities and meet staff and other students.

Residential schools are one week long intensive sessions held periodically across a program of study, and provided free to students to complete the practical requirements of their program.
