# Negative numbers and absolute value

• Adding two positive numbers gives us a larger positive number, for example, $$1 + 3 = 4$$.
• Adding two negative numbers gives us a larger negative number, for example, $$-4 + (-3) = -7$$.
• In cases where the signs of the terms being added are different, sometimes the answer will be positive, sometimes negative. For example, $$-2 + 3 = 1$$ and $$3 + (-5) = -2$$.
