Negative numbers and absolute value

Addition involving negative numbers

  • Adding two positive numbers gives us a larger positive number, for example, \(1 + 3 = 4\).
  • Adding two negative numbers gives us a larger negative number, for example, \(-4 + (-3) = -7\).
  • In cases where the signs of the terms being added are different, sometimes the answer will be positive, sometimes negative. For example, \(-2 + 3 = 1\) and \(3 + (-5) = -2\).
